Lines of Research and Research Projects

Building knowledge through scientific investigation

The Graduate Program in Geography (GPG) at UFRJ currently works with two areas of concentration: Organization and Management of the Territory and Environmental Planning and Management. The founding conception of GPG has been to avoid the Physical-Human Geography divide and seek the integration between teaching and research.

Organization and Management of the Territory

Space and Urban-Regional Dynamics Description

This line of research addresses the processes and spatial forms created by human action, referring to the economic activities and the social space of the agrarian and urban world.

Geopolitics and Territoriality Description

Political practices, carried out by both the State and other social institutions, are analyzed from a territorial perspective.

Culture, Information and Citizenship Description

The cultural dimension of space, involving beliefs, values, myths, and symbols arising from communication, constitutes the object of this line of research.

Development, Environment and Territory Description

Thematic studies and prospective analyses on the relations between development, the environment, and their impacts on the organization and management of the territory.

Geoecological Interactions and Biodiversity

Analysis of geo-ecological interactions and biodiversity in continental and coastal areas of the Brazilian territory. This line takes into account the interactions between biotic and abiotic elements of ecosystems.

Hydroclimatic Dynamics

Analysis of hydroclimatic dynamics, taking into account hydrological and climatic aspects, especially considering the anthropic action as a modifying agent of this dynamic.
